Dear Mr. Svitek:
It is with much appreciation we extend our sincere thanks
to you and to the board of the Kate Svitek Memorial
Foundation.
Because of your generous giving, thirteen students were
able to experience a week-long experiential learning
trip. Each of these studens were given the opportunity
to explore "wild and wonderful" West Virginia,
observing its naturalistic beauty as well as participate
in activites such as camping, caving, hiking and repelling,
just as Kate would have desired. Additionally, they
were able to observe various energy systems common to
the state as well as view how human behavior has left
a "footprint" in the world we live. Each of
these students returned with a better sense of awareness
and appreciation for our environment and the desire
to act in an urgent, responsible manner.
As a result of this trip, several activities have already
been conducted or are in the planning stages. One individual
(a student teacher) came home and shared with her class
her experience observing mountaintop removal. She also
started a recycling program there at the school. Another
student immediately took her family (her husband, 7-year
old son and 3-year old daughter) back to the sites we
visited for them to experience the same sense of appreiciation
she had gained on the trip. Yet another is planning
for a group of student volunteers to participate in
this year's Ohio River Sweep, an annual event involving
eight states geared at cleaning the banks of the Ohio.
We realize that none of this would have been possible
had it not been for your organization's kind generosity
to help encourage these students and steer them into
the right direction of service.
This year's initial trip was a complete success and
we plan to continue the course for the summers to come.
It is our desire for those upcoming students to experience
the same passion as this class, and that future leader's
with a sincere concern for our environment be born.
The legacy you are continuing in memory of your daughter
is to be commended.
Words cannot begin to express our appreciation for your
kind support. Enclosed is a report detailing our trip
and activities as well as picture for the Foundation's
use. We look forward to working with you again in the
future in devleoping responsible adults who have a desire
to care for our world.
Sincerely,
Dr Phil McClung, Professor
