January 3-5,2002 Frank and I spent in Bend,Oregon visiting with Kate. I went on a dogsled ride on the mountain, having a wonderful time and not realizing this same mountain would swallow up my daughter forever. We had a great time- shopped for used furniture, ate great food, saw Kate's apartment and hung out together for the very last time. Did I know it would be the last time I held my beautiful daughter?
I can't believe 5 years have passed. For anyone wondering... it doesn't get any easier.
We miss her morning, noon and night.
We love you Katie.

We had another Great Turkey that Dad and Mike cooked on the barbecue they built. It was fun listening to them debate on how long they should keep cooking and agrue over which one was in charge. Aunt Nancy cane in from California. Bob & Lois, Graham & Lois and friends of the Martins filled the new dining room table. We talked about past Thanksgivings at the Farm. We all laughed about the time you and Mike ran out at the last minute to buy more potatoes, when you already had enough to feed an army.I think of you every day.
Love you and mis you.

Last week in Longport I was fishing from our dock.I was having a good night catching strippers. It was a beautiful night and as I looked to the heavens I remembered it was you who told me about all the fish that you heard when you were sleeping on the deck.I recalled that I thought you were telling me a fish story. I told you the next time you heard fish to come and wake me. You did and I have been catching them and sending them back for someone else to enjoy.I love you and miss you.

Today was a very hard day for me. I don't know why... I miss Kate every day, but I missed her alot today. When I miss her, I often come to the web site and read her writings and all the wonderful stories her friends and co-workers wrote about her. I just want to thank everyone for the amazing stories. I laugh, I cry, and I remember my wonderful daughter.
This web site is a gift and I thank everyone who has written anything on it. If you ever think of more stories to share, please feel free to email them to us.
Thanks and Love,
Ellen

Dear Ellen,Frank and Mike,
It was a grand fundraiser, again, this year, with all your family and friends around to help realize Kate's dream and fullfill her mission. We will not allow the fun and gaity of the party to let us forget the aches in your hearts and pain you feel. Life gave you a bitter lemon and you all make the sweetest lemonade you can to help realize your daughter's and sister's dream come true! You are all inspirational.

Dear Ellen,Frank, Michael and Family,
Just a note to let you know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Seem unbelievable that it's been 4 years since we have lost our chil;dren. When I hear Kenny Chesney's song " I wonder who you'd be today". I imagine Katie and Danny would have the world by the tail, swinging it over their heads and charging full speed ahead into the next adventure. We know by the wonderful letters that in the short time we had them here they touched so many people in good and gentle ways..and so we were blessed to have them for even so short a time. No words can ever take away the ache, but pleae know that we think of Katie almost as often as we think of Danny and pray for us all to make it thru the next day.
Peace
Mare

I just read the newsletter cover to cover and I must say how inspiring it is. It's amazing how many kids have benefitted from the funds you guys have raised thus far.I don't think I ever read the words from Kate'sUVM application before, she was quite the writer. You really got the sense that you were up on Mt.Rainier visualizing the experience, good and bad.
Even though Kate is never far from your thoughts, I can only imagine that this time of year is especially difficult. Frank, Ellen and Mike you certainly have kept Kate's hopes and dreams alive to all who know you and in all that you do. I'm sure Kate is very proud.

Mom, Dad and Michael made a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner on the barbecue that Dad and Michael built. It was the first time we ever ate a Turkey that was cooked outside. It was delicious and everyone enjoyed.Phyliss and Bob Riesner were there along with Graham & Lois Martin. Mr. Riesner talked about the time you checked the inventory in a sporting good store for him and how impresed he was with your report. Nan and I think of you every day.

Dear Ellen, Frank, and Michael,
It was a fantastic fun event tonight, all the while celebrating Kate's dream, realizing Kate's dream, and having Kate's dream live on in all of our hearts. Never can I foget that while having fun there tonight, your heart's ache for your daughter and sister. I understand that in a way that most can not relate to. I want you to know that we have fun at your event, but do not forget the sole purpose of this fundraiser. Thanks for making us know Kate a bit better. The world did lose one of its good seeds. God bless you all!

I just got the most recent news letter from Katie's Foundation and it was AWESOME to read the letters from students, etc who were able to participate in adventures and conservation programs because of the foundation. I hung their stories on my bulletin board because it was just so amazing to be able to see the foundation in action. You guys have done such an amazing job.
I hope to see you both again soon!

Mom and Dad had everyone for Thanksgiving in their house in Florida. Mike from school in California, Aunt Nancy and friend Ric from Martha's Vineyard. Nan and I had the shortest distance to travel. The dinner was delicious as usual and we talked about the time you and Mike ran out before dinner to get more potatoes. You two made enough for an army.Aftewr dinner Mom an Dad showed a Video that you submitted for a job interview to be an outdoor leader. After watching the video it was obvious why they hired you. I saw my little Granddaughter as a mature adult.

I needed to take a moment to make a public "thank you" to Frank and Ellen Svitek and Bob and Hope Clair for their very generous donation to the Danny Curran Scholarship fund. We are coming up on the 3 year anniversary (Nov. 7) of the loss of Danny. With everything else going on in their lives Frank, Ellen, Bob, and Hope still take the time to remember our loss. The loss of Kate and Danny is so hard to comprehend. I think we all still can't believe we won't see them again. So sad! Thank you Frank, Ellen, Bob, & Hope, your friendship and counsel mean a great deal to the Curran Family.

For this past month I have sat at my computer and written different notes to you telling you how proud I am of all that you have accomplished with Kate's foundation.I was never satisfied that I was expressing myself adequately and as a consequence I kept pushing the delete button.
I kept wondering what you, family and friends could do to top the Blue Grass Blast of June 28, 2003 and then June 26,2004 rolled around and you came up with Beatlemania.Mom and I arrived and were overwhelmed by the setting. The weather was perfect, except for a strong wind and I looked to the sky and knew in my heart that Kate would turn off the wind before the guests arrived and the wind stopped. It was a fantastic night! Thanks to all of our family and friends Kate's work will be done.
Love you,

It was a beautiful night filled with wonderful memories. I have not stopped thinking about Kate this week, especially with her birthday being today- I often think "What would Kate do?" and laugh at all the funny College memories or just imagining the way she used to yell "DUGAN!!!" It has been two years and not a day goes by that I do not not think of you. I was telling the Gentry's in a letter that I was writing to them that when I am down, I think of something that we did together and I end up with a smile on my face.I was remembering you as a little girl doing cart wheels on the beach at Cape May. The Gentry's including their daughter Amy and other friends watched as you went across the beach without stopping until you were in the water.
Unfortunately, Amy Gentry Becker died suddenly last year and I was attempting to get them to recall the good times we all enjoyed.

When I heard about the accident I was shocked and I am truly apologetic that it took me this long to be able to give my respect to Kate and her family. Kate and I clicked instantly after meeting on an outdoor leadership trip in early high school and remained friends for a long time thereafter. Whether we were climbing mountains or livening up the streets of Philly and New York we were laughing the entire time. Kate had a huge impact on my life and those summers out west would not have been the same without her there to share the great memories with. My fondness of the west and the outdoors will never weaken and I owe so much of that to her. Kate, you and your family are in my prayers.

Dear Katie:
Nan and I came up from Florida to be with your Mom and Dad for Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, Mike and Aunt Nancy were unable to be with us as we traveled to New York State to be with Cousins Rita & Ira and their children. We had a good time, but remembering how this was your favorite holiday made me miss you more than usual.
I love you Kate and every day when I look at your picture you still bring a big smile to my face.

Thanksgiving was Kate's favorite holiday as you can tell by reading all the stories about her. At this, our second Thanksgiving without our beautiful daughter, I am thankful for the Foundation and all of our wonderful supporters- family and friends. It is our tribute to an amazing young woman who hopefully will have an influence on many young lives although hers was ended all too soon.
Not a second goes by that Daddy and I don't miss you with all our hearts.
We are forever broken hearted and I pray that wherever you are you know how many people love and miss you.

During this time in the Jewish calendar of renewal and New Year, it is important to remember those human beings who were so important in the lives of those they touched. Though I never met Kate, I feel as if she really made such a difference in so many people's lives. Her zest for life comes through so loudly in this web site. She will be in my thoughts and prayers during these next few special weeks.

Once again, I was drawn to the pictures of last Saturday's event and I am in awe of the amazing number of people who came together in memory of Kate and her life goals. It has been so gratifying and cathartic to be apart of the entire group who worked so hard to put together this picture-perfect evening. Like many others, this tragedy is still unimaginable to me and there are days that I find difficult to get through... I then think about Kate, my love for and friendship with her parents, my admiration for them, Mike, Bob and Hope in how they manage to make it through each and every day with endless courage and strength. My deepest thanks for all the fantastic feedback I have received for the ad book. It has been heartwarming, gratifying, and most appreciated!! I am grateful for each day that Kate impacts my life... it's just not a good day, if she doesn't.

Dear Katie:
Today is your Birthday and I have been up since 3:30 this morning thinking about you and remembering this day 24 years ago. I was standing outside the nursery in Chestnut Hill Hospital with Nan pointing you out to everyone who passed the nursery window. You were my first Granchild and I was on cloud nine.We were fortunate to make all your parties when you were a little girl and just this morning I was looking at you on the pony with me holding the reins. As you got older we had to send cards to drop boxes, because most of your older birthdays you were off enjoying the outdoors and doing your thing.I remember your phone calls when your birthday cards finally caught up with you. I could tell by your voice how much you loved being outside living and learning about the wonders of nature. You made me very proud when you told me you hoped to have your own expedition company and include youngster who were unable to pay your proposed fees.Kate,Mom, Dad and Mike threw a fund raiser at the Farm the other night that was a huge sucess.Everyone is talking and raving about this great party.Your foundation has already started to give out schlorships to young people who love nature and the outdoors. The Clairs and Sviteks are very fortunate to have family and friends that want to honor your memory by working and contributing dollars to your founation. You are with me every day, but today is special and I want you to know how much I love and miss you.
Love you Kate,

And the calendar is phenomenal! It will be on my desk for the next 18 months!

I've been on this website a million times...Kate was my best friend from UVM and everyday I miss her. Everytime I feel the urge to talk to her I come to the website and look at pictures or read all the wonderful stories about her...I just looked at the newest pictures and saw the one of her unpacking, or packing, on her NOLS trip and noticed the infamous flip-up sunglasses that we bought yearly on one of our pointless trips to Walmart (who knows why we bought them, I guess we thought we were funny)...What a joker Kate was...to go all the way to Patagonia with only a backpack and to bring those stupid glasses!! Not to say that 2 years after graduating from college I still don't have mine (different colors than Kate's, obviously). Kate can still make me laugh!!!
Love to everyone...
Mr. and Mrs. Svitek and Michael (and the dogs) love you tons!!!

I am always checking this website to see the wonderful tributes that have been paid to Kate. The truth is that no words could ever do her justice. She was one of a kind. Very few people have come into my life who were as real and as true as Kate. She had a sense of self at her age that most people never find their whole lives. I find myself thinking about Kate and her warm and loving family often. I am so sorry for everyone's pain. I am sorry that Kate was taken from her family and the rest of the world way before her time. I miss her today as I do everyday.

Today is March 4, 2003. One year ago today the ski patrol found Kate. I never gave up hope from February 9th until we received the call on that awful day. I believed in Kate's ability to conquer any challenge in her path. There was no doubt in my mind that as hard as we were working to find her, that is how hard she was working to survive. Kate, You are missed and loved by more people than you could possibly imagine. You have touched so many lives.
You will always be our little girl and Dad, Michael and I miss you every second of every day.
Till we meet again, I LOVE YOU...Mommy

Bob, Hope, Frank, Ellen and Michael,
I think of you so often and I am grateful to you for giving me and the rest of the world the opportunity to know Kate and her quest for life in a deeply intimate way. Kate died on my birthday and was exactly half my age. As I've gotten older I've developed a fear for adventure and fun in the outdoors. After reading about Kate, her pure love for the outdoors and her true sence of adventure, it's as if mine has been rebirthed. Alaska in an RV, Hawaii by foot.....Kate's life impacted me.
Thank you Kate.
Love,
Demmie

I live in the apartment below where kate lived here in Bend. I remember seeing her leave for work in the mornings and being so jealous she got to work up on the mountain! after hearing about what happened and how kate passed, i realize how fortunate she was to be able to work in her natural enviornment. she is an inspiration to me to belong more to the outside world, to take care of our world and to appreciate all that it offers us everyday. i'm going to the mountain this weekend, and when i'm there i'll be sure to thank her for opening my eyes to the wonderful surroudings i get to see and experience. thank you for letting me express how her experience has allowed me to experience our world in a whole new way. i will not forget her.

This is an inspiring web site dedicated to an exceptional young woman. You can feel Katie's love, spirit and presence in each page.
Ellen, Frank, and Michael, your love and devotion to Katie is profound and deeply moving. Although Kate's life was cut short very tragically, her impact on those around her will never diminish but strengthen through time.
She will always remain a presence in the lives of the people blessed to have known her. Her Foundation is a fitting way to continue her life's work.

Hello to the Svitek Family. This is a wonderful web site. It is a perfect way to pay tribute to Kate. I have been thinking about your family lately. I was recently on a school trip to Robbins Park with my son. We walked to a spot where I had never been and I realized that we were practically in your backyard. The farm area looked beautiful and it reminded me of a time when we picked Kate up to babysit and she was "hanging" in a tree collecting berries (probably to make jam). What a wonderful way to grow up. It was a nice memory.
Best wishes to you.

I just wanted to tell you that I have been thinking of you for the past week and keeping you in my prayers, particularly yesterday. One year ago tonight at about this same time our world changed forever. We found out our beloved Kate was lost while snowboarding. We prayed for a miracle for 24 long days before the dreaded call came. They found Kate's body. No parent should ever suffer the loss of a child. No brother should have to go through life without the love and support of their big sister. No grandparent should have to bury a granddaughter.
The whole world suffered the day Kate disappeared, because she truly was a very special person.
I LOVE YOU KATE AND MISS YOU EVERY SECOND,

"Hold On"
by The Starting Line
Her life was more than mine,
Like a proud shooting star into the night,
She crashed through the airwaves and ripped like a knife.
Her searching was over, over.
Hold on to the light that guides you,
Hold on to the air that cools you,
Hold on, hold on to me
Her mind steadfast through time,
Her family stood by trying hard not to cry,
With patience and virtue, kept strong through the night.
She never fell to her knees, her searching was over.
And then my eyes stretched out,
As I saw her hand slip away
Hold on to the light that guides you,
Hold on to the air that cools you,
Hold on, hold on to me
Hold on to the light that guides you,
Hold on to the air that cools you,
Hold on, hold on to me.

Kate and I met on a 3 month NOLS course in Patagonia. We were 2 of 4 women on the course, so we became friends and confindants quickly. I think about the course often, and I remember the times that I shared with Kate in tents and in kayaks, on rope teams and on garbage duty. Inevitably, we would end up laughing until one of us was crying and the other was racing to find a place to go to the bathroom.
I am so thankful that I had the opportunity to see Kate at her graduation from UVM. She was radiant that day and she'll live on in my memory as such.

Dear Family and Friends of Kate-
Just a note to let you know that your daughter is remebered here in Oregon. We lost our 21 year old son at sea this past December, along with three other men, while he was commercial fishing for Dungeness crab. In the aftermath of our loss, I remembered reading about your daughter and the search, and I thought of you a great deal. Like your Kate, our Ben was a vibrant, dynamic young man, a college student, and a world traveler, who signed all his letters "Learn, learn, learn!" As I take flowers to the fishermen's memorial, I say a word for Kate as well.

The comments of Molly McCallum and Roger Allen on September 9, 2002 gives the rest of the world insight about people who participate in rescue operations. They are obviously thoughtful, kind, caring, brave and dedicated to their mission. I will never forget their efforts in trying to find our wonderful Kate.

Frank, Ellen and Mike,
My husband and I are volunteers with Deschutes County Search and Rescue. We met you all the first day you arrived and continued to particiapte until you left. My husband spent a lot of time driving Nancy and Jill around in the sno-cat and I was both on the slope, at the top of the chair and in the communication room. Our hearts broke when we didn't find Kate, as we had fully thought we would. We joined SAR(search and rescue) to find people. We have eight children between us, from 21 to 35. Last year we felt the loss of a child from being involved with the search for both Danny and for Kate. We can't look at the mountains, as beautiful as they are, without knowing that two incredible people, who were but children, lost their lives. No classes, no schools, nothing could have prepared Kate for what happened. As 9/11 approaches and one reflects on the senseless events that have happened in the past year, this one is one that brings such sadness for the untimely death of one with so much life and so young. We read about Kate and feel the wonderful, full of life woman that she was and what a gift she was to your family and to those who were lucky enough to have met her. There really aren't words that can let you know the depth of the feeling of our connection to her. We were lucky to have been able to meet you and your family, though the circumstances were not ones we would have wished for. You have an amazingly wonderful, loving family and hopefully that support can carry you forward and keep you moving in the positive direction that was Kate's life.
Our thoughts, prayers and love are with you and your family and friends.
Frank, your letter to Kate, which brings tears to my eyes and a pain in my heart, was so beautiful.
Take care, be well and know that Kate, you and your family and friends are much loved.
Molly and Roger

I'm a friend of Danny Curran's and wanted to say although I'll never know your heartache, I share your sorrow. I stopped by this site about a week ago because I had read so much about Kate on Bend.com while searching for information about Danny. I left about 2 hours and a million tears later. I never knew Kate, but I wish I had. Those of you who love her are very lucky people.
The fact that so many of you could step back from your own pain to offer kind words to the Curran's is amazing and appreciated.
This is a beautiful memorial. God Bless!

Dear Katie:Just want you to know I think about you evey day and miss you so much it hurts. When I get down I start to remember the good times we had and my tears stop and the grin turn into a laugh. Just tonight I had to pull something out of the bay and when I stuck my hand into the cold water, I pulled it back quickly before it got to cold. Then I remembered that you would jump in and try and coax me to follow.
This guest book is a wonderful way for everyone who loves you to keep in touch.

Hi! My thoughts are with the three of you. This memorial is a beautiful idea. I was fortunate to have watched Katie grow up while at GA. Her regular visits to my deli always included her big smile. Our relationship only got stronger with your regular visits to ROP in Springhouse. Do you remember the big snowstorm when the Sviteks were the last customers before I closed or the fender bender the kids wanted to hide from you. We all grew up & shared life's experiences together but I can only stand back and watch with awsome respect how this community & those in Oregan reached out & shared their love, caring & sympathy for all of you. It shows compassion is still alive and overshadows the negatives that exist in this world. God Bless & stay strong! Love, Rich & Melanie

Twenty Three years ago on 7/1/79 your Nan and Pop were on cloud nine.We received a call that we should come to Chestnut Hil Hospital to meet our first Grandchild. Naturally, we thought you were the prettiest baby ever born. Your Dad in Doctor's green and Mom in her hospital gown completed a beautiful setting that we will never forget.
Kate, from that day until you left us(2/9/02) you made us very proud. Some people who live until they are old and gray never accomplish what you were able to do in twenty two and a half years.
Our hearts are broken and we miss you so very much, but we promise we will work for your foundation and raise the funds needed to carry out your goals.
Love you,
Nan & Pop

I briefly met Ellen only once and never knew Kate or her family. Intending to quickly check out Kate's website, now, more than an hour later, I feel that I've gained an insight into a beautiful, caring young lady who truly packed a lifetime into just 22 years. What special parents and family she must have -- to give her the love and challenges that allowed her to grow so quickly and love so deeply.
