Body of lost snowboarder from Ambler found in snow

BEND, Ore. - Nearly a month after Ambler's Kate Svitek vanished while snowboarding on central Oregon's Mount Bachelor, ski patrollers came across her body on Monday. The body was recovered on the northwest side of Mount Bachelor, about 300 feet from where Svitek was last seen Feb. 9.

More than 60 volunteers and professional searchers spent more than 10 days looking for Svitek last month. Jenny Scanlon, a Deschutes County spokeswoman, said the body was buried in snow next to a tree.

"It's been warmer," Scanlon said. "The warming conditions and the compacting of the snow allowed the tip of her snowboard to be exposed." An autopsy will be performed, Scanlon said.

Svitek, 22, who moved to Bend in September, was an avid outdoorswoman who graduated from the University of Vermont last spring with a degree in outdoor recreation.
